The exterior curtain wall approach worked well for our specific situation. We could leave the interior of the house virtually untouched, with the exception of trimming out the new windows and doors inside. The stud and spray foam curtain wall process also suited our semi-do-it-yourself work flow: I could work alone to install the exterior studs, spray foam insulation, OSB sheathing, house wrap, and siding. Also, since the spray foam would expand into all of the gaps and cracks on its own, I wouldn’t have to visually find every hole in my house to air seal it. A full coating of spray foam automatically accomplished what would be a very difficult job to do manually, one crack at a time. I wasn’t sure that I’d be quite as effective at air sealing the house without the spray foam.
